Cal wasnât sure what he expected. Indeed not the lush interior they were ushered into. The lobby was deeply carpeted, with vaulted ceilings and heavy dark furniture, and it oozed wealth and luxury. He waited while Cat attended to the formalities, as off-putting as that was, seeing as under normal circumstances that would have been his role. With keys in hand, they climbed into a cart and were en route to their suite.
They entered the rooms, and Sarah squealed. There was a large bedroom and a smaller, obviously childâs room, each with their own bathroom. The suite also boasted a sitting and a dining area. Each room was decorated in luxurious style, with plush carpeting and luxury beds.
In the large bedroom, Cat dropped her pack. âWell.â She looked around. âCal, you take the smaller room, and Sarah can stay with me.â
Before he could say a word, Sarah marched in. âNo, I want the bedroom in there.â She stomped her foot.
If the situation wasnât so strange, he might have laughed, but Cat shook her head, crouched down to Sarah, and explained, âYou need to stay with me, honey. Just to be safe.â
Initially, the little girl seemed sweet, but Sarah had been changed along the way, her lips now set in a mulish thin line. The girl stamped her foot and shook her head. âNo. I want my own bedroom.â
Cal sighed, realizing that opposition between Cat and Sarah might not be wise. âHow about she takes the small room but we leave the doors open? Iâll sleep on the lounge.â
Cat didnât appear appeased. âI should take the lounge, then, so I can hearââ
âDo you think anyone is going to get to Sarah here? Didnât you choose the hotel because of the security on the grounds?â Cat appeared unconvinced, so he pushed a little harder. They all needed a break from the tension and the highly charged emotional load theyâd struggled with. âCome on. Itâs one night, and you said it yourself. Vorhoek is likely no longer an issue. Weâve gotten across the border.â
Tension oozed from her frame, and she gave in. âI need to check in with my boss first. Stay out here or clean up. Grab a drink from the minibar, but donât leave the suite.â
She turned and left them standing there. Cal looked down at the girl, who continued to scowl. âWell, how about a nice soda, then?â
The girlâs eyes brightened and she nodded. âYeah.â
